When incandescent light bulbs began fading out due to the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) in 2007, several innovative options stepped in to take their place. These alternatives—LED, CFL, and halogen bulbs—offered many benefits to consumers throughout the years. LED Bulbs
Light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs are the most energy-efficient, durable lights available today. The Department of Energy states that LEDs use between 75% and 90% less energy and will last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs. Choosing LEDs will provide decreased expenses because of their low energy use and infrequent replacement needs.
LEDs are also versatile, producing a wide range of light temperatures and colors to suit various needs. They’re ideal for businesses and homeowners seeking long-term savings and minimal environmental impact.
CFL Bulbs
Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) became a middle ground between traditional incandescent bulbs and LEDs. Energy Star states that CFLs use 70% less energy and last roughly 10,000 hours. While their lifespan and efficiency were not as remarkable as LEDs, they were more affordable upfront.
However, one downside of CFLs was that they contained small amounts of mercury, so proper disposal was critical to avoid environmental harm. They also are being phased out by a new rule implemented by the Department of Energy back in 2022. Therefore, finding them in stock at your local store won’t be feasible any longer.
Halogen Bulbs
When looking for old-fashioned bulbs, halogen bulbs were a favored option since they closely resembled incandescent lights in appearance and light quality. They offered slightly improved energy efficiency, using about 20-30% less energy. Furthermore, halogen bulbs had a longer lifespan, ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 hours of illumination.
Halogen bulbs offered warm, natural illumination and the ability to work seamlessly with dimmers. Some people preferred these lights because they were ideal for mood lighting.
While halogens were cheaper than LEDs and CFLs, their energy efficiency and lifespan were notably less favorable. Unfortunately, they’re also no longer readily available since they were banned in the US in 2023.
Which Lights Should You Choose?
